Self Care Sunday  /  March 25, 2018

Honor your younger self

by Jenni Rai, PT, CLT

Due to it’s importance, Self Care Sunday is now a recurring post on #OurTribe!

For today’s Self Care Sunday, I invite you to either meditate or journal on the below thoughts:

What were you like as a little girl? Were you fearless, talkative or athletic? Did you prefer to daydream, read books, or color? Think of a memory from your childhood that makes you smile. What is it about that memory that brings you joy? Was it what you were doing, maybe who you were with? Imagine your favorite outfit as a kid. I know personally, I would have been all over the leggings with tutu type skirt that I see girls in today. Were you more of a jeans and comfy sweatshirt kid? Did you love to be physical, running around outside, playing sports? Did you make up dances and sing?

I recently spent time with my beloved nephews, who are 7 and 4 yrs old. Being with them, I became aware of how authentically they express themselves. Especially Sammy, the 4 year old. The kid just doesn’t give two shits what you think about him. In fact, I’m not even sure he’s considered that other people have opinions of him. He likes what he likes, he says what he thinks, and that’s that. I can already feel the 7 year old beginning to make decisions based on society’s expectations of him. Granted, that’s part of growing up and a skill we need, but it makes me a little sad.

Imagine if we were able to approach the world like Sammy- What if we wore the brightly colored out of style shirt simply because WE liked it? If we belly laughed and snorted when we found something really funny? What if we only ate when we were actually hungry? If we firmly said “no” when we were asked to do something we didn’t want to?

For this week’s Self Care, I invite you to meditate on who you were as a child, and think of one way to honor her during the week. Perhaps it’s as simple as painting your nails sparkly and glittery, or listening to that band you LOVED when you were 12, surprising yourself by still knowing all the words. Or maybe it will go deeper than that. Only you know what you need.
